One woman’s true, hilarious, devastating story of placing her son for adoption.

Baby Mama: One Woman’s Quest to Give Her Child to Gay People tracks one birth mother’s true adoption journey, from conception to placement with the gay couple of her dreams—while still living her life, dating, and attending the occasional orgy. From adoption agencies to vaginal discharge, from burlesque to goodbyes, this intimate night of storytelling is up close and personal. Winner of The Dr. Robert J. Thierauf Producer’s Pick Award of the Cincinnati Fringe Festival. Bring hankies.

Press:

Time Out New York:

  • “MacCarthy doesn’t pull any punches…funny, moving and unapologetically candid…an entertaining slice of biography.”

The Village Voice (“Voice Choice”):

  • “With radical intimacy and humor, she offers a candid look at love, family, friendship, and sacrifice–and there’s even some burlesque to boot.”

Theatre Is Easy (“Best Bet”):

  • “Provocative, heart-rending, and often raunchy…MacCarthy is a terrific performer…honest, direct, and sassy delivery…stellar writing, fabulous performance, and timely political focus…a remarkable and beautiful story.“

Used York City:

  • “Funny at some points and gross at others…always raw, unapologetic, and incredibly honest.”

Hi! Drama:

  • “Her story is both lightheartedly witty and devastatingly sad, boldly provocative and painfully poignant.”

Theater in the Now:

  • “Tugs at your heart as [MacCarthy] shares an intimate and personal story with no fear at all…MacCarthy beams with passion.”

New York Theatre Review:

  • “Mariah’s script and performance are full of heart and an obvious labor of love…It’s really funny, but never self-effacing. It’s incredibly tender, but she doesn’t gloss over or trivialize the complicated parts…Will leave you feeling compassionate, hopeful, and grateful.”
BuzzFeed essay by Mariah:
  • “These kinds of interactions stemmed from assumptions that I was straight, that the baby daddy was in the picture, and that I was planning to raise the baby, not place him in an open adoption with a gay couple. All of those assumptions were incorrect.”

The Brooklyn Rail (interview with Leah Nanako Winkler):

  • “It’s important to make this experience visible. To make people realize that when you think about adoption, think of this. When you think of women being pregnant when they didn’t plan to be and can’t afford to be, think of this. To make us no longer invisible.“

Theatre Development Fund (TDF) (interview with Diep Tran):

  • “I want people to walk away from this being more open minded about what they think family is and what they think pregnancy is and how they talk about those things, and to be more passionate about what the resources are for those people.”

Paste Magazine (interview with Carey Purcell):

  • “Sometimes people say write from your scars, not the wounds. I think that’s a little ludicrous because when the wound is fresh, when the sensations are the most vivid, you can paint the clearest picture. I don’t think the only valid experiences to write about are the ones you’ve healed from.”

Theaterspeak (interview with Micheline Auger):

  • “I feel like this show is the closest that I can come to making people really know what it was like for me. And a huge part of that is that they’re looking at the person who went through it.“

AXS (interview with Meagan Meehan):

  • “When you watch me do Baby Mama, you’re watching me walk a tightrope. You’re watching me vomit up my soul. I love it. It’s one of the most terrifying, life-affirming things I’ve ever done.”

Theater in the Now (interview with Michael Block):

  • “I wanted to stop feeling invisible…I want people to know what this looks like, or at least what it can look like, what it looked like for me. I want people to know that this exists, that this can even be a good and beautiful thing, not a shame-swamp of regret and badness.”
